About the Role

The Payroll and Benefits Manager will assist in the timeliness, accuracy, and compliance of payroll and benefits activities for multiple Axiom Builders’ construction entities. In this leadership role, you will ensure the implementation of payroll best practices and will lead your team to provide excellent service through a culture of continuous improvement taking the payroll and benefits functionality to the next level. The successful candidate will work closely with our Construction Administration team on onboarding new employees and managing payroll for 500+ hourly and salaried employees. Responsibilities include:

  • Promote and encourage a customer-service and employee-friendly culture within the Payroll department and within the company;
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all levels of the staff (site and office) to provide information and answer any questions;
  • Lead the payroll team in the accurate and timely processing of multiple bi-weekly payrolls;
  • Communicate and coordinate with stakeholders regarding recommendations and implementation of new initiatives, systems, and process changes;
  • Oversee billings, regulatory filings, and compliance with legal/statutory requirements: life insurance, extended health, CRA, RRSP, WCB, EHT, etc;
  • Manage processes relating to employee changes, electronic employee profiles and documents received via our online ticketing system (rate changes, promotions, offers, etc) to ensure the accuracy of information within our systems and timely processing; 
  • Mentor, develop, and train employees to provide a solid understanding of procedures, policies, and functions relating to payroll and benefits.

What you Bring

The ideal Payroll and Benefits Manager is a people-oriented professional, who is pleasant and collaborative. You are extremely detail-oriented and organized - you have the ability and experience to manage payroll and benefits for several entities with multiple deadlines. You are someone who is eager and motivated to work in a fast-paced growing team and offer recommendations to implement ahead of Axiom’s exciting growth path.


Skills and Requirements

  • At least five-to-seven (5-7) years of high-volume, multi-entity, payroll and benefits experience;
  • Payroll management experience in both non-unionized and unionized environment;
  • Payroll certification (PCP, CPM, CPA, PCL, etc);
  • Comfortable working with technology / software with proficiency in Excel;
  • Excellent interpersonal (verbal/written) skills with the ability to communicate professionally at various levels of the business;
  • Experience working with payroll and electronic timekeeping software packages;
  • Experience with ERP systems (such as Acumatica) and construction/accounting software (Timberline) will be considered an asset;
  • Prior experience within a job costing or construction environment will be considered an asset.
