About the Role

Axiom Builders is looking to add a Payroll and Benefits Administrator to our growing Payroll team and assist in the timeliness, accuracy, and compliance of payroll and benefits activities for multiple Axiom Builders' construction entities.  The successful candidate will work closely with our Construction Administration team on onboarding new employees and on preparation of payroll for 500+ hourly and salaried employees.  This position will also be the first point of contact for any employee inquiries about our convenient and self-serve payroll and benefits system. 


Key Responsibilities include:

  • Promote and encourage a customer-service and employee-friendly culture within the Payroll department and within the company;
  • Maintain positive relationships with staff at all levels (site and office) to answer questions, introduce new initiatives, etc;
  • Recommend and implement system/process changes and efficiencies;
  • Review electronic timesheet data and process bi-weekly payroll for both hourly and salaried employees;
  • Communicate and coordinate with stakeholders regarding implementation of new initiatives;
  • Organize and manage billings and regulatory filings:  life insurance, extended health, CRA, RRSP, WCB, EHT, etc;
  • Manage employee changes, electronic employee profiles and documents received via our online ticketing system (rate changes, promotions, offers, etc) to ensure the accuracy of information within our systems and timely processing; 
  • Process terminations including record-keeping requirements (e.g. issue ROEs);
  • Assist with benefits administration, payroll accounting:  payroll journal entries, reconcile payroll GL accounts, resolve outstanding items, etc;
  • Support with year-end functions and work with managers to design and implement reports for internal reporting;
  • Ensure compliance with changes in employment standards, collective agreements, legislation, and best practices, recommend and implement changes as required;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Controller or Management.

The ideal candidate for the Payroll and Benefits Administrator position is a people-oriented, service-driven payroll professional, who is interested in driving change, process improvement and innovation. You are a pleasant and collaborative team member, always willing to be helpful and committed to being a high performer.  You are extremely detail-oriented and organized - you have the ability and experience to manage payroll and benefits for several entities with multiple deadlines.  You are comfortable with new technology and new ideas and are eager to offer recommendations to implement ahead of Axiom's exciting growth path.


Our Must Haves

  • At least 5-7 years of high-volume, multi-entity, payroll and benefits experience;
  • Experience working with employees both in a non-unionized and unionized environment;
  • Some form of payroll education or certification (PCP, CPM, CPA, PCL, etc);
  • Experience working with payroll and electronic timekeeping software packages - Ceridian Dayforce and HH2 preferred;
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel;
  • Experience with ERP systems (such as Acumatica) and construction/accounting software (Timberline) will be considered an asset;
  • Prior experience within a job costing or construction environment is preferred;
  • Proficient at working in a digital and paper-free environment.
